The Mental Capacity Act is a cornerstone of decision-making in health, social care, and financial services — but applying it in practice can be complex. In this webinar, Dave Lockwood speaks with Susan Carol, an award-winning independent social worker with decades of experience, to explain what “capacity” really means, why it’s decision-specific and time-specific, and how professionals can avoid common pitfalls.

By the end of this webinar, viewers will be able to:

  • Define and apply decision-specific, time-specific capacity
  • Recognise indicators that capacity may be in doubt and distinguish vulnerability from lack of capacity
  • Follow a structured four-step capacity assessment and record evidence that meets legal and professional standards
  • Manage high-risk decisions such as deputyship removal or will changes with proportionate depth and safeguarding awareness
  • Reduce organisational and regulatory risk by planning assessments carefully and knowing when to seek specialist input

This webinar marks the beginning of a dedicated series delivered by Susan Carol, created for professionals involved in deputyship, safeguarding, Care Act compliance, and supporting vulnerable clients across social care, legal practice, and financial services. Packed with case studies and practical, actionable guidance, each session will be released on the Finders Development Hub as it becomes available, ready to watch on demand whenever it suits you.
